One Green Bottle…

An almost-dead bottle of Dos Equis, Friday night. 1/25, f/2.0, ISO 800, Canon 50mm/1.8, Canon 40D
I had a bad week last week. Not as bad as friends who have lost their jobs thanks to this economy, but still pretty bad. So I was trying to relax on Friday night while my wife was out, watching Battlestar Galactica (finally a good episode!) and drinking Dos Equis, which I developed a taste for when living in Texas. For whatever reason I noticed the color of the bottle contrasting nicely against our plain walls and decided to take a picture.
The first thing I decided was that I wanted to take a shot of exactly what I’d seen. This is a problem in that I’m right-handed and so I’m holding the bottle in my right hand. In my 4-bottles-down state I didn’t realize what this meant until I tried to hold the camera with the same hand at the same time. It didn’t work that well. So I ended up balancing the camera on my chest as I reclined on the couch. I wanted to use my 50mm lens to open up pretty wide to get a reduced depth-of-field, and I had to crane my arm waaaay out to get the whole bottle in the frame. After about 10 minutes of shooting (I kept screwing things up for some reason, wonder why) my arm was killing me. I suffer for my art; or at least, my pointless photos.
So I decided to make this my first photo post because:
– I like the colors;
– I like the DOF, though I wish I had that 5D I’ve been craving to get the DOF down even more ;
– I got a sore arm and so I need SOME mileage from the picture.
One last thing… if you look carefully you can see a slight blue tint down the left-hand side of the bottle. This is actually a reflection from my TV, which was on but showing a plain black screen. For whatever reason it gave me a really pronounced blue glow on the bottle, most of which I got rid of in Photoshop but that small haze remains. Weird.
